Therefore, it’s pretty imperative that you are familiar with the first game. I enjoyed it because I enjoyed the first game immensely … The game isn’t going to reintroduce characters to you. It does not stand on its own very well.īasically, it’s recommended that you play the first game in order to know who everyone is. Additionally, two choices included three options with 2/3 being the “bad” choice and in both cases, the bad choices yielded almost the exact same dialogue regardless of which one you chose (differing only in the character’s execution of the “bad” dialogue choice).Ģ. My only real complaint is that I wish the “wrong” choices had more dialogue to them, rather than being rapid game overs. Players HAD to complete all of the different paths to unlock the BBL route, so everyone’s experience was more or less identical (differing only in order of completion). Most games with multiple paths or endings allow players to walk away only having completed one path (like BioWare games, for example), but Hatoful Boyfriend is not among them. While some might call this out as a huge flaw, it’s not too much of a problem in my opinion. This is kind of similar to the BBL route in the first game, so it’s not a huge let-down. Thus, saving before choices is highly recommended unless you really want to have to skip through scenes. The choices in this game tend to be “progression or game over”. This unfortunately means that the replay value isn’t exactly great. There aren’t really multiple paths/endings besides ones that end in death. Before I jump into praise and spoilers, let me lay down some knowledge and cons:ġ. The story covers Christmas to spring, hence the title Holiday Star (in addition to the plot-related reason for the title). Everyone you love is back in full force, including a few new faces. The chapters start out lighthearted and grow increasingly dark as the story continues, as to be expected with Hatoful Boyfriend. There are 13 achievements, which are not difficult to get, so you’re looking at around 4-6 hours of reading, depending on how quickly you go and how many breaks you take. Luckily, the English release contains all of the chapters as well as the 5 mini-chapters, image gallery, and 6 “radio” sessions (more on that later). From what I gather, the original release of the game was episodic, as there are 4 main story chapters. That’s right, you’re still alive and everything is as okay as it can be, given the odd circumstances you (Hiyoko) are in. The events of Holiday Star take place in a world where the BBL (Bad Boys Love) route never occurred. Now, if you were planning on picking this up and do not want it to be spoiled for you (and didn’t heed my warning at the start of this review), I suggest you hop on over to Steam and pick it up. In honour of this holiday, I decided that there was no better way to celebrate than to review the sequel for Hatoful Boyfriend. Please note that this post will contain some spoilers for the first game, Hatoful Boyfriend (link to my review), as well as for the sequel. Thank you for joining me for this special holiday blog post.
